For 300 years, the Night Men constituted the absolute bottom of Danish society. They were born to do jobs that no respectable citizen or pauper would touch—such as dismembering executed criminals, emptying latrines, and removing carrion. The nightsmen and their families developed into a parallel society, which operated by their own rules and developed their own language.
The story of the Night Men is a tale of the ostracism of a population group, their craving for revenge, powerlessness, powerlessness and pride.
